NATURAL REMEDIES TO STOP ITCHING
Over a decade managing life with eczema means I understand the itch syndrome almost too well. However, during the cause of life we’ll experience itch that makes normal functioning close to impossible, the itch could be triggered by any number of factors, such as a sudden reaction to something external or internal, heat rash in kids, or other underlying health factors or challenges. Bottom line is that the itch is an uncomfortable matter to deal with, and anyone suffering it looks for some instant relief. So here is a list of some natural remedies to stop itching.
ALOE VERA – Aloe Vera has been used for ages in skin care. It has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, many people have aloe vera planted in their homes. To use it for an itchy outbreak, simply scoop out the gel found in the leaf and apply to the itchy area. It should provide instant relief form burning or itching.
GINGER – Ginger is particularly effective against itchy scalp and dandruff. Used alongside lemon it can be used on the scalp by grating some ginger root and boiling it with two tablespoon of lemon juice and water. The brew is then applied to the scalp and left for about 20 minutes before rinsing off. Suffice to say it is a natural shampoo which solves the problem of dandruff.
LEMON – Lemons have great antiseptic, anesthetic, anti-inflammatory and anti-irritating properties. These properties are needed to relieve itching, as itching gets painful for the skin, it could get infected when skin is broken, and it gets red and feels hot most times. To use lemon as a relief from itching, apply the juice using a cotton ball, allow it to dry and rinse off with lukewarm water.
TURMERIC Turmeric is being featured prominently in recent times in the health world as it has many benefits one of it being its fame for being preventive against cancer. The active ingredient found in turmeric is curcumin, this compound attacks the bacteria/viruses that leads to redness and inflamed skin. It can be made into a paste and applied to the affected areas. Turmeric has so many uses even in the beauty and cosmetic care. It can be used in cooking to give any meal the yellow colour or simply for its health benefits.
CAPSAICIN – Simply put, capsaicin is the active compound found in chili peppers and it relieves itching. Capsaicin especially in cayenne pepper is being used in creams to relief not only itching but pain experienced from conditions like arthritis. It is theorized that the compound is able to achieve this soothing effect on pain and itch by overstimulating the nerves so they switch off altogether. Capsaicin creams can be used or the actual pepper split open and rubbed on the disturbing area. Always wash hands after the use of peppers as you will most likely put your fingers in your eyes at some point and that will burn and hurt.
BAKING SODA – In its natural form is Natron. It acts as a natural acid neutralizer that helps relieve itching. It can be made into paste and applied to disturbing areas, leave for some 10 minutes.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR – Apple Cider Vinegar is also famous for its many health enhancing properties, many have reported it curing different skin ailments. The PH level of Apple cider vinegar is harmful for microbes but safe for the skin. Always dilute vinegar before use either internally or externally, never forget this.
OATMEAL – Oatmeal soothes dry itchy skin almost instantly. Oatmeal baths mean soaking in a tub of finely ground oatmeal powder and water, or alternatively making a paste out the powder and applying to the disturbing parts. Products which have oatmeal as a major ingredient also help dry and itchy skin.
NOTE – All of these must be used with caution. Nothing should be applied on broken skin or wounds without proper supervision. Everything applied to the skin should be washed off later. Where any bad reaction is occurring cease the use of any of these and wash off as not everyone may find these natural remedies skin friendly.
